Sky Mirror | Landscape of Chongqing Eling Residences

We took part in designing and reconstructing the living environment at a mountain residential project, which is at the city core and with the highest building density. The project sits on the plateau of Eling Hill, with paramount view of the city. It has the the greenery of the Eling Park on its back. It was designed by the famous Safdie Architects and is full of characters. All these excited us yet posed serious challenges, including overloaded vertical spaces, undefined pathways, rough functional division and the detachment between building and landscape.

Facing these obstacles we commenced “moderate demolish and spacial reconstruction”

Before and after: Pathway

Landscape design inherited the beautiful arcs from the buildings, reconstructed the pathways and functional spaces. New landscape brings setback design to the outdoor space, becoming view platforms. It also hides ventilating shaft, light wells and the likes. The architectures did not leave abundant outdoor space. Luckily the best outdoor view is the city, standing atop Eling. We wanted to incorporate the views into people’s senses when they walk pass the pleasing outdoor space. We deployed a silent water belt to outline the edge of the spaces. It is also the element that connects various platforms. The belt expands to the widest when the view is the best. It’s like a mirror that reflects the sky, the city and the entire environment. Its silence ignites imagination.
